Description

This high cross is found in Co. Tipperary. The pendant represents the South Cross from c. 8th or 9th century AD. There are two high crosses at Ahenny, both of which imitate the earlier wooden crosses. The raised bosses represent the studs that would have kept the wooden crosses together. The south cross stands 3,9 m tall and is made of sandstone. The carving features intricate Celtic designs and four figure carvings on the base.
